University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.Application Deadline: March 19, 2014 at 3:00pm Pacific Time/6:00pm Eastern Time/5:00pm Central Time

NAKFI conferences bring together some of the nation’s best and brightest researchers from academic, industrial, and government laboratories to explore and discover interdisciplinary connections in important areas of cutting-edge research.  Apply now to become part of what many have called a “spectacular and intellectually-stimulating” experience.

Conference Components

NAKFI-Organized Interdisciplinary Research Teams (Core Challenges)Ten to fourteen interdisciplinary research teams will spend a portion of the conference time developing a scientific approach to a “core challenge” related to the conference topic.   The team sessions are designed to spur new thinking, enable you to think about your research interests in new ways and to enhance your networking with participants from other fields.  Teams are not expected to solve the particular challenge.  Instead, teams propose a consensus approach to the issue. Teams are intentionally diverse.

Self-Organized Interdisciplinary Research Teams**

All ideas are welcomed and encouraged! Participants have an opportunity to present their own ideas through two-minute “pitches”.  Participants will then have time during the meeting to form new teams to further explore these ideas.

Preconference Tutorials

Engage before you Arrive!

NAKFI’s lineup of preconference tutorials from leading thinkers in the conference topics will in the topics of the conference will get you thinking and help overcome differences in terminology used by researchers in various fields.  Tutorials will be released on NAKFI’s website beginning late July/early August, and particpants will be notified of new releases through conference e-newsletters.

Poster Sessions

Share your Research!

The conference will include poster sessions so that participants can learn about each other’s research interests in a familiar and informal setting.  Although this is an optional activity, we encourage participants to present a poster on their research.  Poster presenters will be asked to provide a one-page poster summary to be included in the conference materials.
