Imperial College London and Swiss scientists have discovered one gene-based mechanism for why the immune system does not work properly in people who have allergies or hay fever.

They found the gene GATA-3 prevents the body from producing enough regulatory T-cells to stop allergies (regulatory T-cells help the body avoid allergic responses to potential allergens).
