Last year, Cornell University researchers added a fluorescent protein to a human embryo, creating what is believed to be the first genetically engineered human embryo.

The research has recently received criticism as a step towards “designer babies,” even though the embryo had extra chromosomes, making it nonviable. The purpose of the research was to see if the fluorescent marker would carry into the daughter cells, allowing genetic changes to be traced.
