K-NFB Reading Technology, creator and developer of Blio, will bring to life new, enhanced e-book content, including well-known children’s titles, on Thursday, Jan. 6 at the Consumer Electronics Show. K-NFB founder Ray Kurzweil will be demonstrating full-color, studio-quality audio titles on the Blio e-reading software at 3:30 p.m. in Microsoft’s booth (#7144).

Additionally, K-NFB will show an updated version of Blio (version 2.1) that will be released Jan. 17, as well as Blio content on Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7.

Blio, the brainchild of futurist Ray Kurzweil provides access to the largest library of PDF-based, image-rich e-books, including children’s books and cookbooks. The free application (which can be downloaded at www.blio.com) works across device platforms and preserves the original layout and colors of books, while offering advanced capabilities that deliver the most engaging, interactive digital reading experience.

Media are welcome to experience demonstrations of well-known children’s books and other enhanced content on Blio and to interview Ray Kurzweil on Thursday, Jan. 6 from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. in the Microsoft booth (#7144) located in the South Hall at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

No need to grab a special device or reader application.

Lyman sees SkyShelf and browser-based reading as a complementary option to other e-reading market segments. Amazon’s Kindle serves one segment well, he says. Blio is good for art books, cookbooks, and other books with many graphics and for consumers willing to download the software. While LibreDigital is currently targeting consumers with a “read now experience,” he says the company is also having discussions with education and scholarly publishers. […]

The Blio eBook store launched with about 11,000 for-pay titles. Publisher’s Weekly reports that K–NFB is uploading 700 to 800 new books every day. They’re being loaded by their sales ranking, with the most popular books being uploaded first. Contrast this with the 700,000 titles available from the Kindle eBook store as of September 2010. Unfortunately for K-NFB, the Blio rollout was mared by wildly varying prices (one user on Twitter complained of a Steig Larsson novel being offered for $27.95). K-NFB spokesperson Peter Chapman blamed this on database input errors that have now been corrected.
Just as previously announced, the Blio eReader app was launched today for Windows-based devices. The app brings with it access to a library filled with over a million paid and free titles. The program supports English, French and Spanish currently, but there is a plan to add support for Italian, German and Asian-language options later.

In case you’ve forgotten, what makes this digital reading application special are the graphics. Blio is a color and image-filled program that can also include hyperlinks and video clips within content. Maybe this will help e-textbooks (and e-cookbooks, like the one pictured above) more mainstream too.

The Blio application can be downloaded from the Blio eReader site now for free.

Originating as an app to help people with impaired vision read digital content more easily, the partners are marketing Blio to mainstream consumers. Blio aims to preserve the visual format of books and magazines — including layout, type, images and colors — while also enabling an array of digital media, like online video and interactive Web.

The app allows users to make “notes” by saving additional images, video and voice content alongside digital content. Advanced text-to-speech technology developed by Kurzweil allows readers to download two lifelike voices — “Samantha” and “Tom” — for audio reading.

Blio offers users access to 1.2 million titles through a partnership with book distributor Baker & Taylor, Kurzweil said, including rich-media, video, slide-show and audio-enhanced content from top publishers such as Random House, Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins, Penguin Group, Macmillan and Simon & Schuster. Asserting that technological change is exponential, he said that “we won’t experience 100 years of progress in the 21st century,” but “more like 20,000 years of progress.” Ultimately, he said, we will make smarter machines that emulate the human brain, as well as expand human intelligence through the intersection of biology and information technology.

Kurzweil gave a brief demo of Blio, the free e-reading software he developed with KNFB Reading Technology in partnership with Baker & Taylor that preserves “the rich, graphical nature of books” by enabling video and enhanced text-to-speech (TTS) capability.

Kurzweil, who has been in the reading field since 1975, was the principal developer of the first TTS reading machine for the blind. That machine was the size of a washing machine. Now, he pointed out, we have ebooks that fit into our pockets.

He reminded attendees that some of his current predictions might sound as “wild, way out” there as his Futurecast columns when they first appeared in LJ, in 1992-93. In those columns, he wrote that downloadable ebooks would be “a mainstream library service” in the first decade of this century and posited not only “virtual books” but the “virtual library.” […]

The free PC software (Windows XP, Vista and 7 are all supported) can be downloaded now at the source link below; the iPhone app should be hitting the App Store very soon, however. We’ve been using the program for the last few days to, you know, “read,” so before heading over to download it yourself you’ll naturally want to hit the break for our impressions of the unique reading application.

The Blio experience is closer to that of iBooks than Amazon’s Kindle or Barnes & Noble’s Nook programs, and that’s because it was designed to actually mimic the experience of reading a real book. The entire reading experience, down to opening the cover of a book, is animated to feel like you’re actually turning a paper page. We tested the application on a Windows 7 Nav 9 tablet (review of that actual tablet coming soon) and the Core i3-powered ThinkPad Edge 11. We found the application to be relatively snappy, although we noticed some lag in turning pages on the Nav 9 — that, of course, could be related to the Atom N280 CPU.

In partnership with K-NFB Reading Technology, Inc., a joint venture between Kurzweil Technologies Inc. and the National Federation for the Blind, Toshiba Book Place will enable readers to download and access more than a million public domain titles to create mobile libraries.

Toshiba Book Place is the type of entertainment option that our customers are looking for from their laptops,” said Terry Cronin, vice president of Business Development and Channel Marketing, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Digital Products Division. “What sets Toshiba Book Place apart is that it takes advantage of the PC experience and offers an immersive reading environment for the consumer.”

In partnership with some of the world’s largest publishers, Toshiba Book Place launches with capability to access more than a million free public domain titles and thousands more for sale, including many of today’s bestsellers, making it one of the largest online sources of electronic literature. It also promises a new and exciting interactive reading experience as Toshiba Book Place preserves a book’s printed format, including the original layout, fonts and images in full, vibrant colors, with pages that turn like the real thing. Other noticeable features supported by the Toshiba Book Place experience include:

A read-aloud feature that makes instant audio books. Synchronized word highlighting allows children to follow sentences in their favorite books.

An integrated Web search that allows readers to leap instantly from the imaginary world of the story to the Internet.

Toshiba Book Place e-books also make it possible for publishers to embed author commentary, background music and more, while users can insert notes in the margins of pages, as well as hyperlinks into the text.

“With Toshiba Book Place, readers of all ages can enjoy an unparalleled digital reading experience that combines what they love about physical books – including the vibrant colors and crisp pictures – with interactive tools that make books come to life,” said Ray Kurzweil, inventor of the flat bed scanner and character and speech recognition technologies, and founder of K-NFB Reading Technology.

Toshiba Book Place works with Windows-based devices and can sync up to five devices.

As part of the launch, Toshiba will be offering registered users four (4) free pre-selected e-book titles with a retail value of approximately $80. The promotion will be available through October 12, 2010.

The free application can be downloaded immediately to all Windows-based devices at the newly designed Blio.com with applications for iOS, Android and Silverlight platforms available soon.

“Beginning today, readers of all ages will be able to enjoy a digital reading experience that truly harnesses the power of an e-reader,” said Ray Kurzweil, inventor of the flatbed scanner and character- and speech-recognition technologies, and founder of K-NFB Reading Technology. “By providing a full-color, flexible, and interactive experience, Blio redefines the boundaries of the e-book, opening up entirely new categories of multimedia content and, as a result, engaging new groups of readers of e-books.”

Through its partnership with Baker & Taylor, the world’s largest distributor of print and digital books, Blio will offer today’s bestsellers as well as interactive rich-media, video, slide-show, and audio enhanced content from more than 100 top publishers, including Random House, Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins, Penguin Group, Macmillan and Simon & Schuster.

“We are so excited to see Blio go live, bringing an immersive e-reading experience to consumers. Blio offers the most engaging way to enjoy e-books,” said Tom Morgan, Chairman and CEO of Baker & Taylor.

Blio offers a library of more than 1 million paid and free titles, and is currently adding new publishers and thousands of new titles weekly. Currently, Blio supports English, French and Spanish, with Italian, German and Asian-language options to follow.

With its ability to reproduce the color, layout and original fonts as in the print version of a book, Blio brings to life a large selection of books that are not available with E Ink devices. Categories such as children’s books and lifestyle books, encompassing travel guides, cookbooks, and textbooks, finally have an e-reader that can deliver the experience to the reader that was intended by the author.

Blio has a host of functions that make it smart, fun and easy to use. Highlights include:

Blio mimics a book’s printed format like no other e-reader, with files presented in XPS format, which allows digital books to stay true to their original print version. Blio also supports the more limited ePub-formatted books.

Blio is powered by the most advanced text-to-speech technology, using the Nuance Vocalizer, which allows readers to download two lifelike voices (“Samantha” and “Tom”) for hands-free use. To facilitate reading and learning, Blio provides unique synchronized highlighting of the words being spoken.

Blio’s full-media functionality allows users to insert notes into digital pages, highlight sections and even look up references on websites, without leaving their e-book.

Downloaded Blio titles are stored in a personal virtual library, enabling flexible access to content. This library can be accessed easily from numerous devices, allowing users to begin reading their book on a home PC, then pick up where they left off on a netbook or laptop. Future Blio versions will also support tablets and mobile devices and iOS, Android and Silverlight platforms.

The installation was not hard to follow and it took less than 5 minutes to get everything setup. The only downside I have found is that it does not have support for PDF file format, and if you are like me, you have many of e-books in PDF, and last Blio software it is a little bit CPU and memory hungry. K-NFB Reading Technology — creators of this software — with Blio is promising to revolutionize the digital reading experience with full-color, interactive and immersive content. Not only we are going to have a great experience, but Blio will also make it possible to access all our content from any internet connected device that works with Blio. You can also download the e-books and read them when internet isn’t available. If you lose your device you can restore all your content from your online library. Now, fully enjoy the subtlety of design originally intended by the publisher.

But, as of today, September 28, the Blio app is available for Windows. The free e-book reader app features over a million paid and free titles from a plethora of publishers, including Random House, Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins, Penguin Group, Macmillan, and Simon & Schuster. The books are beautifully displayed in color with the original print-version fonts. Kindle owners who are stuck in a gray E Ink world may be wowed by the vibrant colors and graphics. Blio also includes hyperlinks, photos, and video clips within the content.

Blio allows users to directly insert notes, highlight text, and look up references on the Web without leaving the book. The content you download will go into a personal virtual library that you can access on a number of machines, which means you can start reading a book on your desktop computer at home, and pick up where you left off while you’re sitting at a coffee shop with your laptop.

You can even turn your text into an audio book and have Blio read aloud to you. It supports English, French, and Spanish languages, but there are plans to add Italian, German, and Asian languages later. The app should be available for Android, iOS, and Silverlight platforms shortly.

To do so, the maker of software for page design and layout has teamed with the book world’s biggest distributor and the maker of a sophisticated, interactive e-reader platform, Blio, that’s set to debut this fall.

Quark hopes that making its print and Web-publishing software work simply with Blio — plus the 44,000-publisher network of Baker & Taylor, a Charlotte, North Carolina-based book-distribution giant — will make it a major part of the growing market of electronic books and periodicals.

Blio isn’t restricted to any one e-reader device. It will be free and offer at least 1.3 million titles to consumers for use on a wide range of devices. Quark doesn’t make money directly from the partnership. It hopes Blio becomes popular and creates a demand among publishers for its layout and digital publishing software. […]

Press Release | Highly formatted books translate well on interactive e-reader application powered by world’s largest distributor of physical and digital books.

Charlotte, NC – Feb. 8, 2010 – Baker & Taylor, Inc., the world’s largest distributor of physical and digital media, is proud to partner with global publisher John Wiley & Sons, Inc. (NYSE:JWa and JWb) to provide rich, highly-formatted content on Blio. Blio is the revolutionary e-reader software application created by knfbReading Technology and powered by Baker & Taylor.

“Baker & Taylor is proud to offer a wide array of Wiley’s educational and consumer titles on Blio,” said Tom Morgan, Chairman and CEO of Baker & Taylor. “With colorful illustrations, photos and informative graphics, Wiley’s titles, including cookbooks and travel books, offer much more than straight text to educate readers. Readers will be blown away.”

By leveraging strong relationships with the publishing community as well as its best-of-breed digital media partners, Baker & Taylor is converting, managing and delivering new content for Blio every day. With more than 44,000 customers in 120 countries, Baker & Taylor’s global reach makes it the perfect partner to provide superior content management and distribution for the world’s most innovative e-reader application. Baker & Taylor’s affiliation with Blio is its latest step in bringing comprehensive digital media services to multiple channels and to a wide variety of end users, strengthening its position as the premier source for physical and digital media distribution.

“We have enjoyed our longstanding partnership with Baker & Taylor – with its strong distribution infrastructure and expertise,” said Peter Balis, Wiley’s Director of Online Sales. “We are excited to extend our Baker & Taylor partnership beyond physical books to this new and rapidly evolving world of digital media, providing our customers with our must-have titles on this new platform and on the device of their choice.”

Blio, featuring cutting-edge print-to-speech (for rights-enabled titles) and full-color 3-D technologies, is the brainchild of futurist and inventor Ray Kurzweil. Blio delivers the most advanced, flexible and open reading platform in the world. Blio is exceptional at bringing to life the books that Wiley excels in publishing – such as cookbooks (download recipes) and travel books (follow a video to a distant land). Blio is also hardware neutral, meaning it works on a number of devices, including personal computers, laptops, netbooks and iPhones, not to mention up and coming tablets.

All of these enhanced books require work from the publishers, though Blio can handle the task of syncing an audiobook by scanning the text and audio. In that case, it’s more a matter of acquiring the rights to both text and audio, though Kurzweil notes that it opens up an opportunity for publishers to sell a premium version of their books.

Under the hood, Blio uses a number of Microsoft technologies, including Windows Presentation Foundation and the XML Paper Specification (XPS). Kurzweil said his company is also working on a Silverlight version of its software that will provide for Mac support.

Users will be able to register up to five different devices on which they can read their content, although some textbooks will be limited to just three devices to limit piracy. “They are a little worried about some of your generation,” Kurzweil said. […]

“The Newell Perry Award is intended for individuals, blind or sighted, who have demonstrated courageous leadership and outstanding service in the blindness field,” said Dr. Marc Maurer. “Ray Kurzweil has done more than simply invent revolutionary reading technology; he has helped the blind of America to realize our dream of complete independence. He has demonstrated that he truly cares about us, and we present him with this award in recognition of his commitment to ensuring that the blind take our rightful place as productive members of society.”

“Having worked closely with the National Federation of the Blind for 32 years on reading technology, receiving their top award is very meaningful — and moving — for me,” said Kurzweil. “Of course the real prize is seeing blind and dyslexic persons benefit from our technology, but this affirmation of my relationship with this outstanding organization is very gratifying.”

Kurzweil’s most recent technology development is the Kurzweil-National Federation of the Blind Reader, the world’s first handheld portable reading machine for blind, low-vision and learning-disabled individuals. It was developed by K-NFB Reading Technology, Inc., an affiliation between Kurzweil Technologies and the National Federation of the Blind.

The National Federation of the Blind is the largest, most influential membership organization of blind people in the United States.

PRESS RELEASE | The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) unveiled Monday a groundbreaking new device, the knfbReader Mobile. The portable Reader, developed by the National Federation of the Blind and renowned inventor Ray Kurzweil, enables users to take pictures of and read most printed materials at the click of a button. Users merely hold “the camera that talks” over print — a letter, bills, a restaurant menu, an airline ticket, a business card, or an office memo — to hear the contents of the printed document played back in clear synthetic speech.

Combining a state-of-the-art digital camera with a powerful personal data assistant, the Reader puts the best available character-recognition software together with text-to-speech conversion technology in a single handheld device.

“I’ve worked on reading machines for the blind and with the National Federation of the Blind for over thirty years, and this has been the most rewarding experience I’ve had as an inventor,” said Kurzweil, who was the chief developer of the first omni-font optical character-recognition technology, the first print-to-speech reading machine for the blind, the first CCD flatbed scanner, the first text-to-speech synthesizer, and the first commercially marketed, large-vocabulary speech recognition engine.

“I have always said that the most exciting aspect of being an inventor is to experience the leap from dry formulas on a blackboard to actual improvements in people’s lives, and I’ve had the reward of that experience with this project.

This is basically a software invention, he explained. “In addition to squeezing omni-font optical character recognition and text-to-speech synthesis into a pocket sized computer, we had to develop intelligent image enhancement software that could clean up the images of print received from a digital camera. Unlike the images produced by a flatbed scanner, images from a digital camera are subject to rotation, tilt, curvature, uneven illumination and other distortions. The image enhancement software we developed automatically corrects for these problems.

“Because this is a software based technology, our users will be able to benefit from the future improvements we make. In the future, we envision the reader being able to identify real-world objects, and even people’s faces. So, for example, the product may tell you that there is a cat in front of you, a lamp to your left, and sitting to your right is your ex-wife.'”

The American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) presented its Migel 2004 Lay/Volunteer Award on March 6, 2004 to Ray Kurzweil for his extensive work in the field of blindness, optical character recognition, and the Reading Machine for the blind.

Published on KurzweilAI.net March 7, 2004.

I’m honored to receive this prestigious award, and I thank you for recognizing me in this way.

Sue Spungin, who just spoke, mentioned having been impressed by the exhibits on Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison at the National Inventor Hall of Fame. It’s interesting to note that both men were motivated by the idea of creating disabilities technology. Bell was trying to develop a sensory aid for the deaf, and ended up inventing the telephone. Edison’s invention of the phonograph player was intended as a “talking book” for the blind. It is often the case that what starts as an accessibility technology for the disabled ends up having paradigm-shifting mainstream applications.

I’d like to share an observation that has motivated my career in disabilities technology. It is simply this: there is an essential difference between the concepts of “disability” and “handicap.” The word disability is straightforward: it refers to the lack of an ability. All of us lack abilities. None of us is good at everything. A handicap, on the other hand, refers to a fundamental barrier in gaining equal access to opportunities in key facets of life such as education and employment. A disability such as blindness does not necessarily need to result in a handicap. This, I believe, sums up the vital goal of work in the disabilities field.

What is required to achieve this? Technology has an important role to play. Technology such as reading machines can provide needed information in a compensatory format using another sense. I’m proud to have played a role in this arena, and my 30 years of work in reading machines for the blind has been the most gratifying endeavor in my career.

When I was developing the Kurzweil Reading Machine in the 1970s, I worked closely with a talented group of blind scientists and engineers from the National Federation of the Blind, and the project benefited enormously from this unique collaboration. Other talented people have contributed their skills over the years to bring this technology to where it is today. In particular, I would like to recognize Stephen Baum, who heads up the development team at Kurzweil Educational Systems for his decades of devoted and brilliant contributions. Today, I’m working again with the NFB to develop a pocket-size reading machine, which will enable a blind person to snap a picture of a wall sign, the back of a cereal box, an LCD display, a handout at a meeting, and other examples of real-world print, and instantly convert it to synthetic speech.

To achieve full equality in society, we also need training, not all of which is technology-oriented. The fiberglass cane is low tech, but with modern mobility skills effectively eliminates a travel handicap. Perhaps the most important requirement is attitude. First, on the part of society, the understanding that blind persons can compete on terms of equality is critical. Perhaps a blind person can’t drive a taxi today, but there are no significant areas of employment that a blind person is unable to excel at. Even driving a vehicle is going to be feasible in a number of years. Of course, we’ll need some new technology for that, something I may want to get involved in myself in future years. Finally, the attitude of the blind person herself towards her own abilities is also crucial to overcome society’s ancient prejudices regarding the abilities of the blind.

We’ve come a long way in all of these dimensions, and I’m proud to have played a role in disabilities technology, along with many other dedicated people.

In a couple of decades, we will have new ways of communicating directly into our brains noninvasively using blood cell-sized robots in our bloodstream. These new methods will ultimately provide new human communication paradigms that go far beyond the visual and auditory sense. These extensions of the human nervous system will provide new opportunities for overcoming the communication disabilities associated with vision and hearing impairment.

However, we need to keep in mind that that new technologies that provide new opportunities can also present new barriers. Consider the graphic user interface, which was completely inaccessible when first introduced. Or the panoply of new mobile electronic devices that are not sufficiently accessible today. This is a salient challenge for those of us who create new technology: enable people with disabilities to share in the promise of new technology while avoiding the creation of new obstacles.

Thank you once again for this special honor.
