Chemists using light-activated molecules to kill cancer cells

Florida State University researchers are investigating techniques for using certain molecules that when exposed to light, induce apoptosis in cancer cells while avoiding damage to healthy cells.

The molecules’ cancer-killing properties are manifested only when they are exposed to certain types of light, allowing researchers to activate them at exactly the right place and time, when their concentration is high inside of the cancer cells.
