Full-screen displays for the blind
March 31, 2010
North Carolina State University researchers are developing a full-page, refreshable tactile Braille display that would allow the blind to quickly scroll through a document or Web site or “view” a full image.
To lift the Braille dots, the display would use a “hydraulic and latching mechanism” made of an electroactive polymer that is very resilient and inexpensive, when compared to current Braille display technologies.
They hope to have a fully functioning prototype of the mechanism within a year.
