The first human trial of a promising gene therapy (“cure”) for HIV was started last week by Sangamo Biosciences.
Sangamo makes artificial versions of natural enzymes called zinc finger nucleases (ZFNs), which zero in on and disrupt any chosen genes — in this case, the CCR5 gene, which blocks the HIV infection process.
