Google has introduced Lively, an online tool that allows people to embody a cartoonish online avatar and have text-based conversations with friends and other Internet users in virtual chat rooms that can be added to any blog or Web site.

Vivaty, a virtual-world start-up, has introduced a similar 3-D chat room that runs on Facebook and through AOL Instant Messenger.
