Tokyo University researchers have succeeded in genetically modifying a male silkmoth so that it reacts to light instead of odor, or to the odor of a different kind of moth — the first step in a plan to develop a robo-bug that could sense illegal drugs (several kilometers away), landmines, people buried under rubble, or toxic gas.

Their ultimate goal is to understand human brains and restore connections damaged by diseases and accidents.
