Long-Lasting Quantum Memory Leads to Long-Distance Quantum Communication

An international team of physicists has taken a step closer to realizing long-distance secure quantum communication by using an optical trap to confine a group of atoms, in which the quantum state is stored.
They hope to achieve a storage time of a few seconds, which could result in a communication distance of a few thousand miles.
