Computer designers are embedding the latest generation of chips in new places, and giving them ubiquitous new powers to animate the world.

Examples include clothes that monitor a person’s heart rate, breathing and joint movement to report medical condiions and prevent falls; a phone for Alzheimer’s patients hat flashes a picture of the person and a sentence about the last thing they talked about; and sensors placed on fruit trees or other crops to provide information to farmers.
