The first artificial nerve cell that can communicate with nerve cells in the body using neurotransmitters is being developed by Scientists at Karolinska Institutet and Linkoping University.

The scientists intend to develop a small unit that can be implanted into the body, and release neurotransmitters to treat individual patients. Research projects under way are targeted towards hearing, epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease.
