People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has announced a $1 million prize for the first person to produce and bring to market in-vitro (tissue-culture) meat, if done by 2012.

Scientists have been developing technologies to grow tissue cultures that could be consumed like meat, avoiding the expense of land or feed and the disease potential of real meat.
