story |

The digital photo-sharing + instant messaging app Snapchat is hugely popular. According to its parent company Snap, the smart-phone app has more than 330 million active daily users. Snap just unveiled an automated flying selfie drone called Pixy. The $250 palm-sized gadget lifts-off, takes a shareable photo or video of you, then lands by itself.

A selfie is a photo or video you take of yourself — that can be shared digitally using social media apps on mobile phones, tablets, and desktop or laptop personal computers. Watch the featurette below to see the Pixy in action.

A limited supply.

If you’re interested in purchasing a Pixy, act fast — it’s only available until they sell-out. Snap produced this device in a highly limited quantity — to test the concept + the tech. They won’t have more Pixies — or a new model — for an undisclosed time. But other companies are quickly catching-up, trying to launch similar products.

the Pixy’s accessories:

  • bumper + carrying strap
  • re-chargeable battery
  • dual battery charger
  • USB 3.0 charging cable

about | the selfie drone

Your friendly flying camera from Snap is pocket-sized + free flying. Pixy brings magic to every moment — capturing your videos and photos from new heights. No controllers or complex set-up means it’s ready to fly at a moment’s notice. With the simple tap of a button Pixy floats, orbits, and follows wherever you lead. And Pixy will come back to you, landing gently right in the palm of your hand.

You can take your editing studio on-the-go. Tap into the Snapchat eco-system to edit and share your Pixy photos + videos — anytime from anywhere. Use your favorite Snap tools + sounds — or apply lenses before sharing to Snapchat Stories, Spotlight, or any platform.

— about —

On this episode we discuss Snap’s new selfie drone named Pixy — and what it says about the company’s ambitions in the larger social media landscape. The photo-sharing + messaging app Snapchat is bigger than you think. According to its parent company Snap, the app has more than 330 million active daily users — that’s over 100 million more users than Twitter.

Since the Snapchat app is all about sharing photos, Snap likes to come-up with innovative + unique hardware designs that give its users interesting ways to take pictures. You might remember its camera-bedecked Spectacles from a few years ago. Now Snap has unveiled a selfie drone called Pixy. It’s a bit of whimsical fun — the point of the whole Snapchat experience.
