A University of Massachusetts Amherst physicist is building a new microscope that allows scientists to see molecules 100 times smaller than are visible using traditional light microscopy.

Using a technique called Stochastic Optical Reconstruction Microscopy (STORM), it excites only one fluorescently tagged molecule at a time, using small amounts of purple light, which allows each protein to be seen individually.
